Vacation Mode at Home: How to Create a Resort-Like Retreat This Summer

Everyone loves a vacation, but most of us only get away a few times per year.

The good news is you don’t have to wait for a magical alignment between your PTO and bank account to give your nervous system a break. It’s surprisingly easy to bring a few five-star hotel touches into your everyday routine.

As an interior designer serving Hinsdale, Glen Ellyn, and the Greater Chicago area, we love helping clients create spaces they look forward to returning to. Here’s how to make your home feel like a resort with a few quick and easy swaps—no remodeling required.

First, What Makes a Home Feel Restorative?

Before we get into the details, it’s worth asking what separates a merely beautiful space from one that feels restorative.

We think about this in layers.

First is function. Relaxing spaces have to be intuitive. Nothing spikes your stress quite like a closet avalanche or a frantic search through an overstuffed junk drawer. Everything needs a dedicated place that fits your routine.

Next are the sensory details. Soft textures, natural materials, warm lighting, and comfortable seating all affect how a room feels when you walk in.

Last are the personal touches that reflect your habits and what matters most to you. This is one place where your home can be even better than the nicest hotel. A resort can offer beautiful design, but it can’t know your favorite chair, your preferred side of the sofa, or the exact way you like to start a Saturday morning.

So yes, plenty of resorts have show-stopping design details, but you don’t need a ten-foot chandelier or a dramatic water feature to create a luxurious atmosphere. The choices that make the biggest impact are often subtle, quality-of-life updates.

Start with the Bedroom

A great mattress is the ultimate self-care investment. Hotel mattresses are often firm, but yours doesn’t have to be. Choose what feels best for your body and the way you sleep.

Then layer in high-quality linens. Crisp cotton, soft linen, and silky weaves can make an ordinary weeknight feel a little more special. Natural materials like wool, cashmere, and wood add warmth without weighing the room down.

Blackout drapery is another heavy-hitting but relatively simple swap. They help you sleep in, nap, or watch an afternoon movie—all without the annoying glare of the sun. The flexibility to unwind however you choose goes a long way in signaling “vacation mode” to your brain.

Finally, keep surfaces as clear as you can. A nightstand crowded with receipts, water glasses, books, and cords just doesn’t feel luxurious. Give the essentials a place to land and tuck the rest away.

Customize the Lighting

Take a second and picture a beautiful resort or hotel. Now picture it with harsh builder-grade lighting. It’s amazing how fast fantasy falls apart, right?

Lighting has a huge effect on how a room feels, and warm bulbs with dimmer switches are some of the easiest ways to create a soothing atmosphere.

Great hotel lighting is almost always layered. You need general light for getting dressed, task lighting for reading, and softer light for evenings. If every room in your house relies on one bright overhead fixture (also known on social media as the dreaded “big light”), start with some table lamps to create a cozy glow.

Give the Bathroom a Spa Feeling

The bathroom is another prime opportunity to channel the vacation vibe.

Consider bringing in touches of natural stone or warm-toned wood in your decor, and swap out your fixtures—we love clean lines and matte black or brushed brass finishes. A large statement mirror can also make a big difference. It gives the room more presence and can make even a simple bathroom feel more finished.

Plush white towels are a must for a spa-inspired bathroom. Choose 100% cotton and add a matching robe for fun. These are small swaps, but they really upgrade your shower routine.

Handmade soaps are another easy but impactful swap. Stop by a local boutique and choose something that feels more special than the standard bottle by the sink.

The Resort-Inspired Look, In Real Life

We recently worked on a renovation for a busy family. The parents wanted a dedicated space to relax at the end of the day, so we pulled out some of our favorite hotel-style bedroom ideas.

A beautifully layered bed anchors the room. Soft tonal textiles add depth without creating visual noise. The palette stays cohesive so the room feels calm, but texture keeps it interesting.

Lighting was key. We added warm, adjustable layers so the room can shift during the day. It’s functional when it needs to be and softer when the pace slows down.

We also kept the surfaces intentional and uncluttered. Every piece has room to breathe, which helps the whole space feel more restful. The finished result gives the homeowners the escape they wanted, right inside a very active family home.
